Our internal all-hands doc. Plus: better meet Glenn

I’m not going to lie, by the end of December I was plain exhausted. We had worked ourselves hard to cover the big US elections in November; and the end of the year was supposed to be more quiet time to recuperate, work on our internal operations, and so on. You know what happened instead? Tech Layoffs. Elon Musk Twitter Drama. Floods of new members, a profession to stand up for, and a moment to respond to. Plus — the amicus brief!

And you know, I think we did okay there, all things considered! But it was exhausting. I’m still climbing out of that hole. Maybe you had a similar experience. I suspect others at II feel similarly.

But one thing we made sure to do was this — an end of year all-hands for our members. Today, I’m going to share with you the same (lightly redacted) end of year deck we shared with our members. Among other things, it’s a lookback on some of the insanely lucky, amazing, and hard-won impact we’ve had. I think you’d like it.

Here it is.

Important internal document

It was honestly kind of a trip going over all that in one place. Let us know what you think. I think it’s very good.

Another integrity worker who rocks

I just read something I’d like to share.

As you might remember, we’re doing a Getting To Know series with Ben Whitelaw at Everything in Moderation; different members talk about what their jobs are like, how they think; and generally (hopefully!) humanize what it’s like to be people like us.

The latest entry in the series just dropped, and it’s a great one. Glenn Ellingson talked about, well, let me just quote Ben:

  • Making difficult resourcing trade-offs, even at the world's biggest platforms

  • His role as an engineering leader at Meta and what that means

  • The importance of friction to user safety (with a nod to India's highways)

  • Why it's crucial to look after yourself and celebrate the wins

There are great quotable nuggets in the piece, as well as deep insights, and things I just plain agree with, so I really suggest you read it.

PS — LA and Boston

I’ll be in Boston next week for the Rebooting Social Media fellowship at Berkman-Klein. Will you be around? Maybe we can hang. Some members are meeting up too.

All staff (including our new staff — more on that soon!) will be in LA the week after for an all-staff retreat. That’s end of January, early Feb. Will you be there? Are there people you think we should meet? Hit us up.

As always, I love hearing from you. Write me at hello@integrityinstitute.org and subscribe to our newsletter via that handy “Subscribe” box in the footer below.
